
Research Mentor Training
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, along with Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, support internal mentor training and training with collaboration through the . Faculty who mentor students and trainees in the biomedical and clinical and translational sciences are encouraged to attend these trainings that utilize primarily curricula and qualify as evidence-based mentor training for National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation Interests. Mentor Training Requirement
Graduate Faculty must complete mentor training, based on evidence-based practices, with a minimum frequency of once every five years. Initial training requires at least three hours of training. Subsequently, a minimum of one hour of mentor training is required every five years. For faculty new to BCM, mentor training must occur within the first year of Graduate Faculty membership. Effective Aug. 1, 2025, acceptable/current mentor training is required to accept a new Ph.D. student into a lab as their major advisor.
Requirement for Initial Training
At least three hours of training based on evidence-based practices, e.g., based on National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and/or Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) curriculum. Training can be done at BCM, the Gulf Coast Consortium, or other venue.
Training Option: For those with no prior mentor training, please plan to take the three-hour Research Mentor Training鈥揅ore Mentoring Essentials or 6-hour Research Mentor Training鈥 Foundations.
Requirement for Subsequent Training
A minimum of one hour of mentor training is required every 5 years for faculty to maintain a 鈥榯rained鈥 status. Current options for mentor training refreshers (e.g., Brown Bag Session) are available in the Faculty Affairs Workshop Calendar).
Training Option: For those needing to refresh their training, you may select a 鈥淏rown Bag Mentoring Refreshers鈥 session that is offered monthly in partnership with the GCC.
